Millennium Falcon squad…could’ve been…….
When the Star Wars franchise was bought by Disney, it was a no brainier the other Disney subsidy, Marvel entertainment, would start publishing Star Wars books. Marvel had published Star Wars comics in the late 70s to mid 80s before loosing the rights to Dark Horse in the 90s. So being reunited under the Disney umbrella, Marvel and Star Wars have been hard at work publishing a galaxy filling ton of Star Wars related comic books.
Here is a small sample of some the books Marvel and Star Wars put out-the ones to pick up and the ones to skip.
Pick up Darth Vader
Being bad was never so good. After the Death Star explosion, Emperor Palpatine has to punish to someone for this failure and that would be Darth Vader. Now Vader is a on a secret mission to redeem himself in his Empire’s eyes. Writer Kieron Gillen makes Vader a meaningful threat again. Artist Adi Granov creates a quick pace story that never bores. Seeing Vader take names and bend force to his will, will compel anybody to join the dark side if not for a bit.
Pick Up Lando
Hello what do we have here? One big final score is all Lando Calrissian needs to settle his debt in this series written by Charles Soule and drawn by Alex Maleev . This is a soulful book that shows the power of language. Lando isn’t an action star using his blasters get out a situation instead he use his wit and words to help him attain what he wants. Lando #1 is a fun way learn to more about the Governor of Cloud City.
Skip Chewbacca
A roar can be a sad whimper. When Chewbacca crash lands on a planet, he must repair his ship while protecting a young native girl from a small crime lord and the Empire. There’s nothing really wrong with the book or particularly good about it either. The story has a missing ingredient from the writing that doesn’t make the book a must read. Chewbacca is disappointingly non-necessary read.
Pick up Princess Leia
Not letting anybody stop her, Princess Leia decides to round up all the Alderaanians who weren’t killed in the Death Star military strike and find a new planet for them.
Being the only female lead Star Wars book Marvel has produce thus far, there was a lot of pressure for this book to be good and readable. Fortunately, Mark Waid and Terry Dodson were up to the task to make a exciting Princess Leai comic . Waid allows Liea to be tough without the lost of her femininity and Dodson never lets the story feel slow. Each scene including the small character interactions beats move at a speed that could give the Millenium Falcon’s Kessel Run record a run for it’s money.
Skip Kanan The Last Padawan
As the Jedi are exterminated during Order 66, padawan Kanan Jarrus must run for his life from the Empire. This book is for Star Wars Rebels fans. Without seeing the show, the emotional tethers which are suppose to connect you with Kanan just doesn’t exist in the book. It’s fun to look at all the action pages, but there’s nothing of interest for those who haven’t seen Star Wars Rebels.
With the return of Marvel and Star Wars working with each other again they have strike back hard with publishing. There are so many comics out, we hope this article helped you on your journey through the Star Wars universe.
